summer vacation 2011 {chicago}

The reason for the long, long absence is this:

We've been on vacation! On June 9 David completed all requirements for his PhD and on June 13 we left for summer vacation!

First stop: Chicago, IL.

We were delighted to spend time with some of my dear family in Chicago. My great Aunt Jean has been ill, and we wanted to take a trip and see her and my great Uncle Robert. After visiting with them for a little while we, along with my cousins Patricia and Carol, took them out to lunch. Why yes, we did eat Mexican food!
We enjoyed visiting Uncle Robert and Aunt Jean

Little "A' enjoyed being with her Grandpa!

Mother and Daughter

Three generations of lovely ladies!

After our lovely day with family David and I headed into the city for some fun around Chicago. We knew from my brother and niece about some great sites to see in the city (and from one of the blogs I follow). Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there. As in pouring down, raining cats and dogs, kind of rain! We didn't get to see this:

We were so looking forward to the concert in the park, but alas, it was cancelled. As were the fireworks on Navy Pier.

Driving in the rain...

Chicago in the rain
This was our view for most of the time we were in Chicago

Embracing the deluge of water, we made our way to Shedd Aquarium. Evidently most of Chicago thought that sounded like a swell idea! The Shedd was very busy! I got a couple of fun pictures, and a great video of a stingray showing off for us!

Shedd Aquarium

It stopped raining long enough to take a photo and run to the aquarium!
Okay, so we got two pictures!

A Sea Anemone

Kind of blurry - it was through a window, and poor lighting!

Looks like a crab, right? He's actually a lobster!

Mr. Stingray was showing off!

Since the concert and fireworks were cancelled we decided to indulge ourselves and enjoy some authentic Chicago-style pizza. We headed to Uno, where our waitress, Marti, has worked for 35 years! Must be a good place to work, eh?
Jealous?
We took some home to the family! Those two pizzas must
have weighed close to ten pounds! They were delicious!

Our stay in Chicago was too short, but we enjoyed spending the rest of our time with family! Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures with my cousins Martha and Doug, who so graciously hosted us - and 12 other family members!
We enjoyed 7 month old "A" - she's such a sweet baby!
David got "baby duty" one morning. "A" was so sleepy, and wouldn't go down for her morning nap. David just rocked her and held her for a long, long time. And she was pretty happy to hang out with him!

The time we spent in Chicago was wonderful! We loved being with family! Maybe on our next trip to the Windy City we won't have to deal with all that rain!

Next up: St. Louis!

Looks like y'all had a great time, despite the rain. Yes, I'm VERY jealous! That pizza looked YUMMY. :-) I look forward to reading more, and "vacationing" vicariously through you. :-)

What a great! Not jealous of the pizza, but jealous of David's Baby Duty!

BTW - The Sea Anemone photo is outstanding!

Like Wendy, looking forward to reading more!

Oh yeah - it was Uno's we ate at a gazillion years ago when we stopped through Chi while on our Train Trip!
